Species: Dog
Condition: Elbow Dysplasia – OCD of the Elbow
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Elbow dysplasia is the collective name for a group of conditions of the elbow joint, which some believe are variations of a single conditions called osteochondritis dissecans (OCD). OCD is abnormal development of cartilage (the tissue which becomes bone as your pup matures). This is a hereditary disorder prevalent in larger dogs, however environmental factors such as diet, activity, and trauma also play a role. Your dog will show lameness, usually in a foreleg first and your vet will check for elbow dysplasia by an Xray. Treatment for this condition is likely to include a combination of medication, surgery and lifestyle management.
