Condition: Elbow Luxation
Organ System: Musculoskeletal
Elbow luxation is the displacement of one or more of the three bones that compose the elbow joint. It can be caused by trauma or it can also be inherited. Breeds predisposed to congenital elbow luxation are the Pug, Afghan Hound, Doberman, Dachshund, Boston and Yorkshire Terrier, Shetland Sheepdog, Miniature Poodle, Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Cocker Spaniel, Bouviers des Flandres, Jack Russell and English Bulldog. Clinical signs are lameness, slightly bent forearm, inability to fully extend the elbow and elbow swelling. Treatment involves putting the elbow back into correct alignment by surgery or by closed reduction.
