Species: Dog
Condition: Epidermal Dysplasia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Epidermal dysplasia is a disorder which is unique to the West Highland Terrier. It is a skin condition which means that your dog is hypersensitive to a yeast organism called Malassezia which is common to dogs and has no impact on healthy animals. Your dog will develop greasy, snake-like skin and will suffer from constant itching. This condition usually becomes apparent at about 6 months of age. Although this condition is treatable, the treatment is extremely expensive and your dog will generally require medication for their whole life. For this reason many owners decide to have their pet put to sleep.
