Species: Dog
Condition: Exercise-induced Collapse of Labrador Retrievers
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Exercise-induced collapse (EIC) is a genetic disorder seen in Labrador retrievers in which the affected dogs start to lose control of their hind limbs after strenuous exercise. Affected dogs carry two copies of mutated EIC gene. Signs of the disorder include muscle weakness, lack of coordination, and life-threatening collapse. The most common triggers of collapse include hunting and retrieving; excitement and high environmental temperatures may contribute. Treatment for EIC involves avoiding “trigger†exercises and the use of anti-seizure medications. DNA tests are available to detect EIC and affected dogs should not be bred and carrier dogs (dogs carrying 1 copy of normal and 1 copy of mutated EIC gene) should only be bred to clear dogs (two copies of normal EIC gene).
