Species: Dog
Condition: Eye Abnormality
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
There is a large number of eye abnormalities in dogs. Majority of them are congenital and evident shortly after birth, but some of them can develop spontaneously. Congenital eye anomalies are often caused by retention of the structures present in fetus (e.g. persistent pupillary membrane, coloboma) or by incomplete development of the eye (e.g. retinal dysplasia). They can affect the eyeball itself or the surrounding tissues. Dogs display a variety of symptoms ranging from mild, curable discomfort to irreparable blindness. The vet is usually able to diagnose and suggest further management of every eye condition.
