Species: Dog
Condition: Factor X Deficiency
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Blood clotting is a complex, cascade-like process involving a variety of proteins needed to control and activate certain phases of it. Factor X is one of those important proteins. In its absence the process of blood clot formation is impaired and the animal is more sensitive to injuries and bleeding. Factor X deficiency is very dangerous, even fatal in newborn and young puppies, sometimes leading to severe internal bleeding. Adult dogs are not so severely affected, usually appearing healthy and displaying the symptoms of bleeding disorder during surgery or injuries with mild episodes of prolonged bleeding.
