Species: Dog
Condition: Fanconi Syndrome
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Part of the function of the kidney is to reabsorb some necessary nutrients. If your dog has Fanconi syndrome then the kidney is unable to do this with the result that these nutrients are lost. This leads to serious issues for your dog such as electrolyte imbalances, dehydration and weight loss. This disorder is generally inherited and the Basenji breed is particularly prone to it, however it may also be caused by environmental factors. The symptoms of Fanconi syndrome normally become evident at around 3 to 7 years of age. Currently there is no cure for this condition; however your vet can prescribe medication to support kidney function.
