Species: Dog
Condition: Fibrosarcoma – Cutaneous
Organ System: Integument
Cutaneous fibrosarcoma is an uncommon malignant tumor of the skin arising from cells called fibroblasts. They appear as firm, poorly circumscribed, often multilobular masses 1 cm to >15cm in diameter found mostly in the subcutis and may occur at any anatomical site. The average age of dogs is 8.5 years with no sex predilection. Breeds at an increased risk are Golden Setters, Irish Wolfhounds, Brittany Spaniels, Golden Retrievers and Doberman Pinschers. The tumor is locally invasive and has a low rate of metastasis to distant areas. Treatment involves surgical removal of the tumor and/or radiotherapy, or chemotherapy. Recurrence rate after surgery is from 7% to 32%. Prognosis depends on tumor size and grade, and whether the tumor has been completely removed at surgery.
