Species: Dog
Condition: Fibrosarcoma Oral
Organ System: Gastrointestinal
Oral fibrosarcoma are tumors derived from fibrous connective tissue found in the oral cavity. They usually occur in the gums, around the upper molars, in the palate, the upper mandibular third, oral mucosa, lips, tonque, and palate. They are locally invasive, affecting local bone tissue and seldom metastasize except late in the clinical course. In large dog breeds, oral FSA occurs at a young age, with a mean age of 4-5 years while in small breeds, it occurs at ~8 years of age. Treatment is by surgical excision; oral fibrosarcomas have a high recurrence rate after surgical excision. Prognosis depends on the location, histologic grade, and size or clinical stage at the time of diagnosis.
