Species: Dog
Condition: German Shepherd Pyoderma
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Pyoderma is a bacterial skin infection common across all dogs, however German Shepherds are prone to a particularly severe variety of it which affects the deeper layers of the skin rather than just the superficial ones. German Shepherd Pyoderma can generate severe chronic draining lesions on the hind legs and back. The early symptoms of this disorder may be hidden by your dog’s coat, but you may notice your dog biting at their legs and back. If left untreated, the condition will worsen and you will begin to see hair loss, deeper ulcerations and draining sinuses. It is likely to require life-long management.
