Also called Thrombathenic Thrombopathia, it is an inherited platelet disorder which has been diagnosed in Otterhounds and Great Pyrenees. It is a rare bleeding disorder where a dog has normal platelet counts but show an abnormality in platelet aggregation and blood clotting. This can increase the risk of bleeding and spontaneous hemorrhage which can be life-threatening. Young dogs are supplemented with iron to prevent anemia. For unknown reasons, the problem usually subsides as the dogs grow into adulthood.
