Grass Awn Migration in dogs

Species: Dog
Condition: Grass Awn Migration
Organ System: Integument

Grass awns tend to embed in the skin of pets. These arrow-shaped stickers can easily penetrate the skin and move or migrate within the skin. They have the potential to cause irritation and infection in areas of the body where they are embedded including the skin, ears, nose, and eyes. Grass awns can also migrate throughout a pet’s body, causing irritation and infection in major body organs including the heart, lungs, and other internal organs. Symptoms and severity of signs will depend on where the grass awn is embedded. Most symptoms resolve rapidly when the grass awn is located and removed.
