Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis in dogs

Species: Dog
Condition: Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis
Organ System: Gastrointestinal

A condition mainly characterized by bloody diarrhea. Most cases are accompanied by vomiting and occur suddenly in otherwise healthy canines. The problem may affect any breed, gender, size, or age, but it is most prevalent in small and toy dog breeds—especially young miniature schnauzers, miniature French poodles, Yorkshire terriers, Shetland sheepdog, Pekingese, Cavalier King Charles spaniel, and poodle. The exact cause of the condition remains unknown and often viewed as idiopathic. Potential predisposing factors include stress, hyperactivity, and anxiety. With appropriate supportive treatment and antibiotics, most affected dogs recover in time.
