Species: Dog
Condition: Hemangiosarcoma
Organ System: Cardiovascular
Also called skin cancer. It is a malignant tumor arising from the endothelial cells that line the entire circulatory system. Most cases occur in older dogs; breeds at greater risk include Golden Retrievers, Boxers, and German Shepherds. Hemangiosarcomas can occur anywhere in the body, but generally in the subcutaneous tissues, skin, heart, and spleen. Most cases are accompanied by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) which is a defect in blood clotting. Being highly malignant tumors, they can spread easily and most treatment protocols are not successful.
