Species: Dog
Condition: Hereditary Retinal Dystrophy of Briards
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Also called Congenital Stationary Night Blindness. It is a hereditary autosomal recessive disease of Briards mainly characterized by night blindness and various vision problems. Symptoms are brought about by retinal dysfunction and lipid vacuole accumulation in the epithelium of the retinal pigment. Affected dogs show structural changes of the outer segments of the rod, as well as pigment epithelial inclusions. The disease is prevalent in Briard dogs 6 weeks of age and up. Some affected puppies suffer from hemeralopia leading to permanent blindness. There is no satisfactory treatment for this condition.
