Species: Dog
Condition: Hypothyroidism
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
A state of decreased thyroid gland activity resulting in slower metabolism rate. It is commonly the result of hereditary autoimmune condition, usually affecting middle-aged dogs. Most prominent symptoms include symmetrical skin and hair changes: dark and hardened skin, dry hair and bilateral hair loss. Affected dogs are also suffering from fertility issues, are lethargic and more prone to obesity and other health issues. Your vet will confirm the diagnosis with blood tests that show decreased levels of thyroid hormones. Although hypothyroidism is permanent condition, it can be managed with daily doses of thyroid hormone replacements.
