Species: Dog
Condition: Ichthyosis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Ichthyosis is characterized by thick, rough skin on your dog’s body and footpads along with a covering of greasy, scaly flakes of dead skin. The following breeds appear to be predisposed to this condition: Doberman pinscher, Jack Russell, West Highland terrier, American pit bull terrier, Cavalier King Charles spaniel and Golden retriever. The symptoms of ichthyosis will be present at birth and will worsen as your dog ages. There is currently no cure for this disorder and the intensive care your dog will need for the rest of its life is a significant commitment. You will need to discuss with your vet whether this will be feasible for you.
