Species: Dog
Condition: Immune-mediated Hemolytic Anaemia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Dogs with Immune-mediated hemolytic anaemia (IMHA) often appear to be simply off-colour, lacking appetite and energy. In severe cases your pet may have discoloured gums and suffer from breathlessness. This condition mainly affects older females of the following breeds: Cocker and English Springer spaniel, American Collie, Doberman, Irish setter, Old English sheepdog, miniature Poodle, miniature Schnauzer. If your pet shows any of these signs, contact your vet immediately as many dogs with IMHA die within the first few days. Your vet will prescribe drugs to combat the impact of the condition but your dog may require a blood transfusion.
