Species: Dog
Condition: Insulinoma
Organ System: Endocrine
Also called, pancreatic cancer, the condition refers to malignant neoplasms affecting the beta cells of the pancreas. Beta cells secrete insulin, a hormone whose primary function is to regulate glucose levels in the body cells. Insulinomas causes excess secretion of insulin resulting in hypoglycemia. Affected dogs suffer from weakness and/or neurological problems. The most common sign is collapse or loss of consciousness. Seizures and others neurological abnormalities are also common. When a dog collapses due to hypoglycemia, corn syrup may be given to increase glucose levels. Surgery, together with a prescribed diet, can greatly reduce symptoms.
