    Intervertebral disk disease is a condition which mainly affects older dogs. The only young dogs which have a tendency to this disorder are those bred to have short, thick legs (such as the bassett hound, dachshund and corgi) and the Doberman pinsher. The disks are spongy layers of tissue which protect the small bones around the spinal cord from shock. If your dog is affected by this disorder, this tissue becomes hardened. In older dogs the hardening is generally mild and may cause no issues but in younger dogs it can lead to severe pain and/or paralysis in the back and hind legs. Your vet can treat IDD through medication and/or surgery.
