Species: Dog
Condition: Kartagener Syndrome
Organ System: Respiratory
Also called ciliary dyskinesia or immotile cilia syndrome. It is a condition where the cilia lining the respiratory passages fail to function properly, increasing a dog’s risk to respiratory infections. Affected dogs suffer from recurrent respiratory infections such as pneumonia, bronchiectasis, rhinitis, and bronchitis even while still very young. Ear infection and sinusitis may also be manifested. Common signs include coughing, nasal discharge, breathing difficulties, wheezing, exercise intolerance, and hearing problems. Male dogs may become infertile because of immobile or poorly motile sperm. The condition is often associated with situs inversus, where the organs of the body are located opposite its normal anatomical location.
