Species: Dog
Condition: Lobular Dissecting Hepatitis
Organ System: Gastrointestinal
It an immune-mediated type of hepatitis affecting juvenile to young adult dogs. The problem is often seen in American Cocker Spaniels and Standard Poodles. Clinical signs include weight loss, accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity, with or without jaundice. A common sequel of the problem is the formation of numerous secondary porto-systemic shunts. Advanced cases often lead to cirrhosis. The treatment regimen involves supportive therapy to control fibrosis and antibiotics, and a low-protein diet. Prognosis highly depends on the extent of damage of the liver and the degree of fibrosis.
