Species: Dog
Condition: Lymphosarcoma
Organ System: Cardiovascular
Also called Malignant Lymphoma. It is one of the most common tumors in canines. The growth originates from lymphoid tissues, such as the spleen, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. However, these tumors can also arise in any body tissues. Frequently seen in middle-aged to older dogs, there is a higher incidence among Boxers, Basset Hounds, Scottish terriers, Airedales, Bull Mastiff, and Saint Bernards. The problem has been classified into five different stages based on the degree of metastasis and invasiveness. The cause has not been pinpointed and is likely due to a combination of factors. The treatment regimen is based on the stage of the disease. Prognosis is poor; with most dogs succumbing to the disease in 4-6 weeks. Systemic chemotherapy is the treatment of choice in most patients.
