Species: Dog
Condition: Malocclusion
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
An inherited jaw abnormality causing the dogs to have the irregular bite. In the ideal case, upper incisors should overlap and touch lower ones. Dogs with irregular bite have inherited the faulty gene responsible for uneven growth of the upper and the lower jaw. Most common irregularities are overshot (upper teeth overlap the lower ones) and undershot bite (lower teeth overlap the upper ones). In some cases these conditions are considered normal for certain breeds or for a particular period of development in which they occur. But, in some situations, irregular bite can cause mouth injuries and therefore requires treatment.
