Species: Dog
Condition: Medial Canthal Pocket Syndrome
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
The syndrome is used to describe chronic irritation of the cornea and conjunctiva in dogs which are often attributed to the abnormality in the anatomy of the eyelids. The condition is common brachycephalic breeds and dogs with shallow orbits. Debris is deposited in a conjunctival pocket at the medial canthus formed by an abnormally narrow skull coupled by deep set eyes. The presence of foreign matter eventually leads to recurrent conjunctivitis. The syndrome has been known to pave the way for pigmentary keratitis, corneal ulcers, or epiphora. Blepharoplasty, a surgical procedure, can be performed to alleviate clinical signs and improve the comfort of the dog.
