Species: Dog
Condition: Microblepharon
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Also called Blepharophimosis. Affected dogs have an abnormally small palpebral fissure. It is a genetic condition and thought to be associated with other eyelid problems such as microphthalmos, entropion and excessive skin folds in certain breeds such as the Chow Chow. The problem has also been seen in Shetland Sheepdogs and Rough Collie. It is mainly asymptomatic and surgical correction is not usually required. Surgery may be undertaken to increase the palpebral fissure. Prognosis is excellent for affected dogs.
