Species: Dog
Condition: Micropapilla
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
A dog with Micropapilla has a smaller than normal optic disc however the abnormality is not associated with vision loss. It is a heredity condition that may be difficult to differentiate from the hypoplasia of the optic nerve. In fact, it has often been viewed as a mild form of optic nerve hypoplasia. The dog may experience vision problems when the problem is moderate to severe. There is no treatment for the condition but the dog can still manage well since the other senses can compensate for the loss. A dog that carries the gene for this condition will give rise to offspring where the clinical manifestations tend to get worse.
