Species: Dog
Condition: Mucopolysaccharidosis Iiib
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Also known as Sanfilippo syndrome type IIIB, this congenital disease is characterized by nervous signs that usually appear between 2-4 years of age. The symptoms are attributed to the severe degeneration of the central nervous system. The problem has been diagnosed in Schipperkes. The symptoms include tremor and balancing difficulties that are noticeable when the dog walks, climb stairs, or negotiate obstacles. The disease is progressive with no effective treatment. Most dogs diagnosed with the disease are recommended for euthanasia. Carriers of the trait do not show clinical signs but are capable of transmitting the problem to their offspring.
