Species: Dog
Condition: Muzzle Pyoderma
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Pyoderma is the bacterial infection of the skin affecting the muzzle. It usually appears secondary to other conditions compromising the skin integrity such as allergies, poor nutrition, parasites, etc. Muzzle skin is covered in pimples, crusts and patchy areas without hair. The area is often very itchy. After general examination, the vet will take samples for skin cytology to exclude some other causes. Sometimes, additional skin testing and blood work will be necessary. The vet will prescribe oral and local use of the antibiotics combined with therapeutic baths; but it is important to uncover and treat primary condition that led to pyoderma.
