Species: Dog
Condition: Necrotising Myelopathy
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

A hereditary anomaly affecting the spinal chord and causing its progressive degradation. It impairs the dog’s ability to use its legs eventually leading to complete paralysis. The dogs start showing symptoms at a young age (3-12 months. As a result of muscle weakness and lack of coordination in the legs, toenails are worn and the toes scuffed. Gradually, the dog loses its ability to walk or stand. The animal is able to defecate and urinate and the pain is not present until the last stages of the disease. Unfortunately, there is no successful treatment method, and it is wise to seek veterinary advice before deciding the dog’s future.
