Nodular Panniculitis in dogs

A possibly hereditary skin disease. Affected dogs have soft or firm nodules under the skin. They can be present in a small area or throughout the body; but usually they are found on the neck, trunk or feet. In complicated cases, skin overlaying the nodules dies away, forming painful ulcers with hair loss in the affected area. Such dogs can be feverish and lethargic. In simple cases with small number of nodules, the vet can surgically remove them, but in complicated cases with ulcers and fever, additional treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics will be needed. Once removed, the nodules can sometimes return.
