Species: Dog
Condition: Ocular Melanosis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Also known as ocular melanocytosis or melanosis oculi. This is a congenital problem affecting the eye of Cairn Terriers. The condition was previously known as pigmentary glaucoma. The cause of the disease is the increased number of melanocytes in the choroid, iris, and associated structures. Overproduction of melanin by the melanocytes can block the trabecular meshwork through which fluid is drained from the eye. The accumulation of fluid in the eye results in increased ocular pressure, leading to glaucoma. Treatment regimen involves medications to reduce the amount of fluid produced by the eye, increase drainage of fluid from the eye, and reduce production of pigment in the eye. In extreme cases, medication may fail to control the pressure and surgery to remove the eye may be only the option that is left.
