Species: Dog
Condition: Onychodystrophy
Organ System: Integument
Also referred to as Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy. This is an immune-mediated problem affecting the claw of dogs. Distinct signs include separation and sloughing of several of the dog’s claws from the claw beds. In time, all the dog’s claws will be affected. Some dog breeds which are predisposed to the condition include Miniature Dachshund, Gordon Setter, and English Setter. Black hair follicular dysplasia is often concurrent in the Gordon Setter. Treatment is aimed at preventing secondary infections using appropriate antibiotics. A daily dose of fatty acids and vitamin E is also recommended. Nail regrowth is usually noted within 3 months after therapy is started.
