Species: Dog
Condition: Osteochondritis Dissecans
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
A defect caused by the inadequate circulation in the part of the bone that is involved in the joint. It is therefore damaged and easily breaks into fragments, causing pain. This condition is more often seen in large breeds at their young age, usually affecting shoulders, knees and elbows. Dogs are displaying various degrees of lameness that tends to worsen during exercise and improve after rest. The diagnosis is based on the physical examination and X-ray of the joint. In mild cases dogs are given anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers with strict rest. In serious cases, it is necessary to surgically remove the defect from the joint.
