Species: Dog
Condition: Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
An inherited disorder of the bone development. Bones reach expected adult size, but are very fragile and therefore very susceptible to fractures. The teeth are often affected as well. Clinical condition can vary from mild to very severe cases determining the treatment options and prognosis. As a result of multiple fractures, dogs are often limping, their teeth are easily breaking and the X-ray shows decreased bone density. In very severe cases spontaneous fractures can occur. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition and it therefore very important to avoid all activities that can lead to bone fractures.
