Species: Dog
Condition: Otitis Externa
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
The inflammation of the outer ear canal, caused by a variety of reasons, from allergies to parasites and infections. It is more common in breeds with flapped ears. The owner notices the dog is scratching its ears and shaking its head vigorously, not allowing the ears to be touched. The vet will otoscopically examine the ears and take smears of the ear canal in order to determine the cause of the inflammation. It is important to immediately start the treatment with the combination of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and antiparasitics in order to prevent further spreading of the condition to the middle and inner ear.
