Species: Dog
Condition: Pancreatic Insufficiency, Exocrine
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Inability of the pancreas to produce and excrete enzymes essential in the digestion of eaten food. The contents cannot be broken down for the body to use them. The affected dog is literally starving. So, even though its appetite is preserved, the animal is progressively losing weight. It suffers from vomiting and diarrhoea episodes and defecating large amounts of foul-smelling, fatty-rich excrements. The vet can confirm the diagnosis with blood and stool tests. The treatment is expensive and long lasting, but very successful. It requires lifelong therapy with replacements for the missing enzymes along with dietary adjustments.
