Species: Dog
Condition: Panosteitis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Panosteitis (“pano”) is a common cause of lameness in young (6 to 18 months), medium to large breed dogs. The following breeds appear to be particularly prone to this disorder: German shepherd, Basset hound, Doberman pinscher, Labrador retriever. There is painful inflammation in the long bones of the front and hind legs. The inflammation may move from leg to leg. Your dog may also experience loss of appetite, fever, lethargy and weight loss. This disorder will generally resolve itself in time, although your vet may prescribe pain-relief and/or anti-inflammatory drugs during the period of lameness.
