Species: Dog
Condition: Patent Ductus Arteriosus
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
The ductus arteriosus is a blood vessel used to carry oxygen to the lungs while the pup is still in the womb. At birth, the pup starts breathing for itself and the ductus arteriosus should close naturally. If your pup has PDA, the ductus arteriosus remains open, meaning that blood has further to circulate. This creates significant strain on the heart to the extent that PDA can lead to terminal heart failure within the first year. PDA is usually first detected when your vet checks your pup’s heart as part of a routine check-up and confirmed with an echocardiogram (ECG) scan and/or a chest Xray and is normally treated through surgery.
