Species: Dog
Condition: Perineal Herniation
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
A large swelling in the area around anus caused by the loss of muscle support in that region. As a result, parts of the fat tissue, big intestine or even urinary bladder are protruding under the skin near the anus. It is more commonly seen in older, intact male dogs. Besides the visible swelling, the affected dogs have difficulties defecating and urinating. The vet will diagnose the condition with rectal examination and X-ray images of the area. It is necessary to correct the hernia surgically. After the procedure the vet will provide instructions on further care and the information on possible complications in the form of infection or incontinence.
