Polyneuropathy, Distal Sensorimotor in dogs

Species: Dog
Condition: Polyneuropathy, Distal Sensorimotor
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Disease of the nerves that are conducting impulses between the central nervous system and the muscles. Affected nerves lose the ability to carry information from the brain and the spinal chord resulting in loss of sensation. Affected dogs have impaired gait and muscle tonus. They are stumbling, unable to jump or run. The condition worsens progressively; often manifesting itself in episodes; inevitably leading to paralysis. The dogs are probably feeling more pain as the condition progresses. Unfortunately, there is no available treatment, and keeping in mind the nature of the disease, it is best to talk to the vet about further steps.
