Species: Dog
Condition: Polyradiculoneuritis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Inflammation affecting various nerve groups and causing paralysis. While the specific cause is unknown, the disease is often seen in dogs in contact with racoons. Symptoms start a week or two after the contact. Dogs are weak, often unable to bark, have troubles breathing, with stiff gait, slower reflexes and hypersensitivity to pain. The vet will get detailed disease history, thoroughly examine the dog and perform additional neurologic and laboratory testing. Therapy is focused on treating severe symptoms, as they progress quickly; so many affected dogs need to be hospitalized. But, proper home care is the key to successful recovery as well.
