Species: Dog
Condition: Prognathism
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
A hereditary jaw anomaly where the lower jaw is visibly longer than the upper one or vice versa. It is caused by the defective development of the jaw. If the upper jaw is the longer one, it causes overbite. Opposite, longer lower jaw creates underbite. This is a normal characteristic of many breeds, such as brachiocephalic breeds. As a result of uneven jaw lengths, teeth fail to align properly. This condition usually causes no problems. Only in severe cases, where the ability to feed is impaired, a combination of orthodontic manipulations and teeth removal might be needed. But most dogs with prognathism live a normal and healthy life.
