Species: Dog
Condition: Protein Losing Enteropathy
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Digestive disorder caused by the damage of the intestinal wall resulting in massive leaking of proteins from the bloodstream to the intestine from where they are lost in the stool. Dogs have long lasting diarrhoea; they are losing weight and have enlarged abdomen. They are lethargic, with breathing difficulties (accumulation of fluid around lungs) and swollen legs. PLE is a very serious and potentially life threatening condition requiring intensive veterinary care. Since there is no cure, you will need to work with your vet on assessing a detailed treatment and management plan with special nutrition and frequent check-ups.
