The condition is characterized by a non-inflammatory swelling of the head of the optic nerve. Potential causes include brain tumors, hydrocephalus, and orbital lesions. Clinical signs are brought about by the increased intracranial pressure brought about by the primary cause, and may include vision problems such a reduced pupillary light responses and blindness. If left untreated, there may be atrophy of the optic nerve leading to loss of sight. Prognosis depends on the underlying cause.
