Species: Dog
Condition: Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Phosphatase 1 Deficiency
Organ System: Respiratory
Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Phosphate 1 Deficiency (PDP1) is a genetic deficiency which has been diagnosed in Clumber and Sussex spaniels. It is characterized by a lack of enzymes that results in failure of the PDH complex to get rid of the waste products of metabolism. Affected dogs suffer from extreme exhaustion and very poor exercise tolerance. There are cases when the dog recovers and walks normally again however these dogs have very poor tolerance to exercise. PDP1 can be a major predisposing factor of major heart and lung problems that can eventually lead to early death. Being carried by an autosomal recessive gene, a carrier must have mated with another carrier for their offspring to manifest signs of the disease.
