Species: Dog
Condition: Severe Combined Immunodeficiency
Organ System: Respiratory
Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) can be thought of in similar terms as AIDS in humans. It is the most severe of the immune disorders and currently is invariably fatal. Unlike AIDS, this condition is purely hereditary and only male pups display symptoms, although females can be carriers of the disorders. Pups with this illness usually die by 3 or 4 months. It may even be kinder to have your pup put to sleep and your vet can discuss this with you. Affected dogs will almost certainly die before they can be used for breeding however you should alert the owner of your dog’s mother as neither she nor her daughters should be bred.
