Species: Dog
Condition: Sick Sinus Syndrome
Organ System: Respiratory
Sick sinus syndrome is when your dog’s heartbeat follows an inappropriate rhythm, which may be either too slow or too fast. The following breeds are particularly prone to this condition: miniature Schnauzers (particularly females), cocker spaniels, West Highland terriers and dachshunds. This disorder is painless and does not affect the internal tissue in any way, so when your vet has corrected your pet’s heart rhythm, there is a very good possibility that your dog will be able to lead a normal life. Sick sinus syndrome is characterized by fainting fits and is usually managed by your vet fitting a pacemaker.
