Species: Dog
Condition: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Organ System: Integument
A chronic and potentially fatal autoimmune disease, where a dog’s immune system forms antibodies against itself resulting in the inflammation and damage to major organs of the body including the heart, lungs, kidneys, skin, joints, blood, and nervous system. There is no cure for SLE, but it can be managed. Lifelong treatment is essential. Breeds noted to have high incidence of SLE include Beagles, Shetland sheepdogs, Poodles, German shepherds, Irish setters, and Rough collies. Affected dogs are usually middle-aged, with males more predisposed than females. Treatment regimen is aimed at reducing inflammation and autoimmune activity.
