Species: Dog
Condition: Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome
Organ System: Immune
It is an autosomal recessive mutation occurring in Border Collies. The mutation results in the failure of the white blood cells to be released from the bone marrow into the blood circulation. Without sufficient circulating white blood cells, the immune system is incapable of fighting off infections and the affected dog eventually dies, usually when they are about a few months old. One distinct sign is a bad reaction to vaccinations. Many puppies born with the condition are asymptomatic. There is no cure for the problem and it is almost always fatal.
